A delighful place for safe bathing, angling, windsurfing, sailing, walking, bird watching - an ideal holiday !
Historical Notes
Back in the 17th century, La Turballe was a tiny fishing port with only 15 houses. The construction of several canning factories from 1824 onwards contributed to its development. Today, La Turballe has about 4500 inhabitants (about 10 times more in summer).
Location
Situated a few miles north of the river Loire, La Turballe benefits from a vey mild climate influenced by the nearby salt marshes and the Gulf Stream. In fact, it is considered to have its own micro climate. Miles of sandy beaches, alternating with stretches of rocky coastline are very popular with holidaymakers.
Premier anchovy and sardine port
Located between Le Croisic and Piriac, La Turballe was the most important port for anchovies and sardines on the French Atlantic Coast. Be sure to visit the fishing harbour to see the different types of deep sea fishing boats. The fishing fleet consists of over 80 boats ; some sailors make their living from fishing.
Adjacent to the fishing port is leisure marina, offering 300 permanent berths and 20 berths for visiting yachts.
A pleasant seaside resort
As well as the eight miles of sandy beaches and the activities mentioned above, La Turballe offers a wide range of entertainements and sports to enjoy : daily boat cruises to Belle Ile, Houat and Hoëdic, coastal walks, cycling, leisure park, tennis courts, cinema. Climb the church tower at Trescalan for a spectacular view of the whole area. Or even - dare we say - just relax !
A variety of restaurants welcome visitors including, of course, those specialising in sea food. There is a twice weekly market in the town centre and fresh fish sold on the quay every day in july and august.
The Surroundings
La Turballe is an excellent centre for exploring the surrounding country side. The adjacent salt marshes offer opportunities for walking and bird watching as well as finding out about the salt industry, still active today. The marshes are particulary worth seeing at sunset.
Close by is the historic walled town of Guérande and the Parc de Brière - a natural wetland area with thatched cottages. A little further away are the bright lights of La Baule and Saint Nazaire.
