SUBMARINE ESPADON : SAINT NAZAIRE

Built in Le Havre and launched in 1958, this submarine covered during its 25 year long career the equivalent of 17 times the circumference of the earth ! Since 1987, the Espadon (Swordfish) has been the only floating submarine open to the public in France.

Come on board and discover the surprising history of this boat, the first French submarine to have dived beneath the North Pole ice field. Experience the living conditions of the 65 crew members who had to share one (salt water) shower, and put yourself into the strategic position of the " golden ears "...

The audioguided tour offers fascinating insights into the life of the submariners but also gives the possibility to listen to sounds which are not exactly part of everyday life : have you ever heard the noise made by hundreds of shrimps under water, or by an iceberg braking in two ?
