GUERANDE is a stunning mediaeval town with its walls intact and even the moat still filled with water. Happily the town also has a lovely bed and breakfast, making a visit to GUERANDE even more special.
LE TRICOT, a stately, cream-colored, 17th century mansion, is hidden behind stone walls at the end of a small lane. Sunshine pours in past cream shutters and bathes the house in light. It has been in the de Champsavin family for seven generations.
In the LIVING ROOM, windows face east and west so dawn and sunset are heavenly ; once the last rays ebb away, the marble fireplace, piano and coat of arms come into their own.
The DINING ROOM is as impressive : doors lead out to the garden, there's a black and white tiled floor and a splendid portrait of the Duke of Anjou - later Philip V of Spain.
All BEDROOMS are as pretty as can be, some of them have exquisite Japanese fabric on the walls, polished boards and old rugs, French antiques are dotted about.
All rooms have top-notch, tiled bathrooms with showers or depp tubs and oddles of towels.
One of the most enchanting features of Le Tricot is its gorgeous GARDEN, which stretches out behind the home to be enclosed by the mediaeval stone wall of the town. It has an informal English air, is impeccably kept with box-trimmed colorful flowerbeds and mature trees. In spring and summer it seems ready for a photo shoot from a gardening magazine.
The rest of the PENINSULA could occupy you for weeks : go sea fishing, ride, explore the bustling harbours and do visit THE SALT MARSHES, its fascinating salt museum and waterways of the BRIERE REGIONAL NATURE PARK, a heaven for bird life.
